Alexander Makaroverse: from Kazan to Hollywood — the journey of the founder of the Makaroverse Alliance media holding

17 min read

Rarely does a media holding stand behind a single story. Behind Makaroverse Alliance stands a director, camera operator, editor, composer, sound engineer, producer, 3D graphics specialist, VFX specialist and VR app developer all in one person — Alexander Makaroverse. His path began with a child's film camera, went through victory at an international contest by Sony Pictures and a flight to Hollywood — and led to the creation of an ambitious project uniting cinema, music, photo, IT and full-cycle services. This is a story about how a man first followed his dream alone, and then built an entire ecosystem around it.

First frames: seven years old and a film camera

The countdown can start long before the first music videos and festivals. Alexander first picked up a film camera at the age of seven. That is where everything began: a love of the frame, of light and composition, the habit of looking at the world through a lens. He took a lot of photographs — on film, frame after frame, because in childhood every shot was not a "limitless buffer" but a deliberate choice. Those years shaped the photographic thinking without which there is neither directing nor cinematography.

Makarov or Makaroverse: one name across two eras

In early publications — in the MovieStart feature about winning the Picture This contest and in the report of the Tatar-inform news agency — the founder appears as Alexander Makarov. Today his current name is Aleksandr Makaroverse, and it is the name behind all the projects and resources of the alliance. Below we use the modern name, while quotes from archival publications are given in the original.

The beginning: a lawyer who dreamed of cinema since the age of 13

A biographical note is given by the Tatar-inform report (October 25, 2016):

"Makarov is a lawyer by education, but he has been interested in directing since he was 13 and studied at directing courses."

Before the big contest he had already tried his hand at cinema: he shot short films and took part in film festivals — he presented his works at Kinotavr and the Kazan International Muslim Film Festival. But the path from participation to recognition was not quick.

Victory in Picture This: a video that had it all

In 2016 Alexander Makaroverse won the regional stage of the Picture This contest-festival, organized by Sony Pictures and the UN Foundation, with his video. The Tatar-inform headline speaks for itself: "A Kazanite defends Russia's honor in an international environmental video contest."

Key facts of that stage:

  • The contest was held as part of an international environmental campaign by the Russian TV channel Sony Pictures Television.
  • The goal of the campaign was to promote a careful and responsible attitude to the planet.
  • The entry format was an original video from 30 seconds to 7 minutes long.
  • 120 authors from Russia and the CIS took part in the first, regional stage.
  • Alexander became the only representative of Russia to reach the international final.

He made the video in four roles at once — screenwriter, director, camera operator and editor. Actor Alexander Khramov was involved in the shooting, and assistant director Dilara Harisova took part in the preparation. Her comment to the agency succinctly describes both the video and its author:

"The video was entirely the idea of the director himself. In the video, a dried-out tree is being chopped down. It is his first contest — and immediately such a success."

The final of the contest took place in Los Angeles, where a jury of experts evaluated works by participants from the UK, Spain, Portugal, North and South America, the USA, Asia and Central Europe. The winner of the final was promised a Grand Prix of 5 thousand dollars and other prizes. Alexander's video was translated into English for the final.

The idea of The Plantman

In an interview with MovieStart, Alexander tells how the story of the winning video began:

"I was always interested in the theme of ecology and its development in the art of cinema. One day on one of the websites I came across a banner with the inscription 'Win a trip to Los Angeles by making a short film'. It caught my attention, I clicked the link and saw information about a contest held by Sony Pictures."

The idea was born a year before he saw the contest information, and it was originally bigger — a 15-minute film was planned. But only 20 days remained before the submission deadline, so the plot was shortened to a quality two-minute short. This is how the video The Plantman appeared:

"It tells how a person comes through his own tragedy to unity with nature and to care for it."

Shooting: two hours on set and three hours looking for a stump

The filming process itself took little time. In fact, two main scenes had to be shot, showing the hero in two personas — before and after the transformation: first a man chops down a dried-out tree, then he comes to unity with nature. It took only a couple of hours. However, it was not without incidents:

"When we shot the first part, our saw broke and we had to stop filming. But fortunately, there were enough shots for editing."

Pre-production took longer. Alexander thought for a long time about how to show man and plant as one whole. Options included tree bark and silicone pads, but they were hard to implement in a short time. The solution turned out to be simple and low-cost:

"I used glue and small leaves to attach them to our actor."

Finding the location was a separate story. Literally one day before the shooting, Alexander walked through the forest looking for props, and only after three hours of searching found that very three-meter stump that ended up in the frame.

"It was my dream for a very long time"

Before Picture This, Alexander had experience of participating in regional and federal film festivals, but he rarely passed the selection. That is why the victory at the Russian stage came as a surprise:

"It was a joyful surprise to become the winner among participants from Russia. I could not believe that I was flying to Los Angeles! It had been my dream for a very long time, and now it came true!"

Trip to Hollywood

The trip to Los Angeles became a point of no return. Alexander describes it almost tangibly:

"When the plane's landing gear touched the asphalt of LAX airport, I still could not believe I had made it to Los Angeles. Having arrived after the long journey, I realized that through my own efforts I had overcome all the difficulties, they were behind me, and I had reached my goal! The trip to Los Angeles became a cure for everything: for overwork and the difficulties I faced in Russia. All of it simply ceased to exist."

In Los Angeles he was met by a Sony Pictures employee who escorted the guest to the hotel and on the way answered many questions about the USA, the city and the people. During the conversation he asked who Alexander's favorite film director was. The answer — James Cameron. And then came what "struck to the depths of the soul":

"Imagine, the very place where you are now sitting is where James Cameron sat."

A day at Sony Pictures

On the second day after arrival, the regional winners went on a tour of Sony Pictures, where the studio staff warmly welcomed them. The guests were shown a film about the history and development of the company and invited to visit many interesting places:

"I saw the studio where one of my favorite composers, Hans Zimmer, recorded his works, many museums and hangars where famous TV series and films are shot, and even the place where the Oscars are kept. I saw an Oscar statuette live for the first time in my life. For me it was all an indescribable sight. I had never seen such a huge number of studios in one place!"

After the tour, the participants took a master class on 4K technologies — the very ones Alexander used while working on his short. It was useful to hear recommendations from professionals and learn from their experience.

Life before and after: what the victory gave

Three years had passed since the contest, and for Alexander everything was "like yesterday". The victory became an inner core for years ahead:

"I began to believe in myself more and realized that the impossible is possible. All people involved in film and video production can reach their goal and deliver a successful project. To do this, you must keep moving and not stop in front of the difficulties that all creative people face."

He drew the line that many of his projects would later echo:

"You could say my creative life split into two stages — before Picture This and after. The trip to the festival gave me the impetus for further creative development and growth. My vision of film production changed, and many ideas appeared for implementing my projects."

And — a short formula that became the headline of the MovieStart publication:

"The Picture This contest erased all the frames and boundaries in which I had lived before."

Immediately after the victory, Alexander began work on the script for a feature-length version of The Plantman. His words of that time sound like an admonition to everyone who is just starting:

"Do what you love, with love and from the heart. Do it the way you think is right. And most importantly — do not be afraid of anything and step out of your comfort zone. Even if you think nothing will work out, try anyway."

The founder of the Alliance: how one person united an industry

The same approach that helped Alexander assemble the winning short single-handedly — "minimum team" and "every participant a universalist" — became the architecture of an entire holding. In 2025 he founded the Makaroverse media alliance: a union of studios and services for joint work on projects in cinema, VR, 3D and AI media.

Makaroverse Alliance is an ambitious project that combines directions usually living apart:

  • Cinema — feature, animated, documentary and folk.
  • Music — platform, label, music videos and soundtracks.
  • Photo and art — photo platform, 3D photo, painting.
  • IT and VR — virtual and augmented reality apps, web studio.
  • Sports — sports films and documentaries.
  • Business and creativity — video production, printing, industry services.

Directions of the full-cycle holding

The list of directions and services is constantly updated — all resources of the holding are actively developing, expanding and adding new companies, projects, directions and solutions to the ecosystem.

IT in media: the alliance's main focus on automation and optimization

Special attention deserves what distinguishes Makaroverse Alliance from classic film and media studios: a focus on IT in media. This is not "information technology around cinema", but a fundamentally different approach to production — when scale is achieved not by the number of employees, but by automating workflows.

The holding's philosophy is simple and resembles the logic of IT companies: replacing hundreds of employees with IT solutions that take over the routine — from shooting processes to post-production and marketing. This is how the main effect is born — budget savings. A project that in a traditional studio would require a whole staff of producers, managers, assistants and technical specialists is implemented in the alliance's ecosystem by a compact team of universalists — supported by automated platforms.

This approach is not saving for the sake of saving. It is resource optimization, when every budget goes to creativity and technology, not bureaucracy. The fewer people are needed for routine, the more freedom directors have and the faster the client gets the result. Automation in the alliance covers the entire cycle: from receiving a casting application to automatic music distribution and rendering of virtual worlds.

Which IT projects are already working

  • Makaroverse Engine — software and services providing the digital infrastructure of the holding: the base on which the entire IT ecosystem is built.
  • VR Mini Apps and AR Mini Apps — constructors of virtual and augmented reality apps.
  • Makaroverse Studio — the composer of the unified Makaroverse Engine platform: the engine handles rendering, physics and WebXR, while Studio handles assembly and post-production of the final frame.
  • 3D Photo One — a service for volumetric 3D photography and stereoscopic content.
  • Songmeed — a music web service, and V Leible is our own label platform.
  • Kinematografisty.rf — aggregator of opportunities for filmmakers in Russia and the CIS: festivals, grants, platforms, resources.
  • V Kastinge — a service for actors and directors that automates talent selection.
  • V Filme — a cinema portal connecting projects and audiences.
  • Batyr Media — IT solutions in media, from automation to new formats.

Mission of Makaroverse Alliance

The mission of the alliance is inseparable from the person who created it. The motto of the holding's film studio is "We do not create films — we create worlds". From this grows the mission of the entire ecosystem: to change how modern media content is created — through new technologies, budget optimization and unconventional solutions, from script to global distribution.

The practical tasks of the alliance:

  • Joint work of studios on projects in cinema, music, VR, 3D and AI media.
  • Covering the full production cycle — from idea and shooting to post-production, printing and promotion.
  • Supporting filmmakers through the services Kinematografisty.rf, V Kastinge and V Filme.
  • Developing the festival movement — the Batyr Festival and partner platforms.
  • Promoting regional culture, folk and documentary cinema of Tatarstan.
  • Creating a unique visual language through new production formats.

Goal: the first full-cycle media holding in Tatarstan

The project's ambition is stated with maximum clarity: to become the first full-cycle media holding in Tatarstan — with no analogues in Russia. An association where film studios, a music platform, photo services, VR and AR, web development, IT solutions, printing, regional production companies and services for professionals live under one roof does not yet exist in the country. Each resource of the holding has its own niche, and together they close the "idea — production — distribution — promotion" chain without outside contractors.

The founder's role in this structure is not decorative: Alexander Makaroverse acts both as a director and as a producer and as the chief architect of the ecosystem. His experience — from a three-hour search for a stump in the forest to visiting the studio where Hans Zimmer recorded his soundtracks — became the foundation on which the holding is built. And his experience as a VR app developer and his commitment to automation made IT in media not a side direction, but the core of the development strategy.

Summary: from Kazan to Hollywood, from Hollywood to a media ecosystem

The story of Makaroverse Alliance is still being written, but its logic is already clear. Starting with a film camera at seven years old and a two-minute short, Alexander Makaroverse went on to become the winner of an international contest by Sony Pictures, a participant in more than a hundred film festivals, the seller of a script to Hollywood and the founder of the first full-cycle media holding in Tatarstan. His media ecosystem unites cinema, music, photo, IT, VR, sports, business and creativity — and at the head of this union stands the same principle that brought victory in 2016: to do things well, efficiently and with love for one's craft.

"The Picture This contest erased all the frames and boundaries in which I lived before" — this phrase from the interview proved prophetic. Today Makaroverse Alliance is erasing the frames and boundaries for an entire region, turning into an ambitious project with no analogues in the Russian media industry.
